Cameras

Hi everyone,

Just wondering if anyone has any experience using either the Olympus E-420 or the Olympus Zuiko Digital 35mm f3.5 Macro Lens?

Basically, I've run in to the limits of my small digital camera (especially on pictures like the Pint Sized Slasher ones - Without a better macro mode, images of models only 1cm tall become very hard!). So I've decided to get myself a new DSLR. I was going to get a Nikon D40x, but unfortunately its now been discontinued. I knew i should have bought it when it was on sale at Jessops!

Given my budget (about £300+/-), I've basically come down to the Olympus model mentioned with the Zuiko macro lens in a few months once I've saved up.

Does anyone have any alternatives they can recommend? What do you guys use? This camera will only really be used for taking pictures of my models, and although I'm not an advanced camera user, I am willing to learn - hence I would like a camera that will not need to be replaced in the near future and which will "grow with me"...

I just picked up a D40 from Argos for £250. It takes fantastic pictures of my Miniatures, not to mention everything else.

Macro photography, like all photography really is more about the lens than the camera - if you're on a tight budget have a look at Sigma/Tamron lenses rather than the camera makers own unless you can get a good package deal at somewhere like warehouseexpress.com. I'd also have a look at lens review sights like DP review or Fred Miranda

I have a Nikon D60. The quality of the pictures is stunning. It uses the Nikon DX AFS 18-55 lens with antishake. I cannot rate this product too highly.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the comments,

@Mark, thanks for the link - When i check it out though they list it as being out of stock :'(

@Tom, I hve previously looked at some of the Sigma lenses, but they tend to cost as much as my entire budget! I think that a proper macro lens will be something i have to "grow in to" over time. Good advice about the mfr lenses tho, Ill keep that in mind...

@John, Is the 18-55 The standard lens for the D60? The D60 was the other model i was looking at, tbh i trust Nikon much more than anyone else...

They will be out of stock online, but if your near enough to a store, they should still have some in.

I'm in hull and when i got mine, they had 3 in each of the stores.

I'll leave a recommendation for the Sony DSLRs, just got one for the wife (as she had a bunch of older pentax lenses) and it is nothing short of awesome. (the A300 is now on sale for £300 from Jessops with a 18-70 lens).

@bg, I borrowed a friends A300 recently and i have to say it didnt "float my boat". I wasnt particularily keen on the "style" of images that it generated - Not sure if thats just because i dont know how to use it tho! It took very impressive pictures of (for example) my garden, my wife etc, but the moment i put it up in front of a model, using the same setup as my little "snappy" camera it seemed to produce pictures that looked worse than my "snappy" camera.

Do you have any example images that you have taken of models using it? Ive got my friends one for a couple more days, so I'm wondering if i need to give it another go, because as you say, the price is attractive...

@paul
Sorry didn't reply earlier, I'm away for work. I don't have any pics to hand, but could send some in a week or two although I guess that would be a bit late - sorry
